Research: Popularity of my sub-genre of Music Video

The popularity of my genre pop-punk is a niche genre, it is a genre that has particularly die hard fans instead of a wide range of fans.

It started off with influences from Punk music such as Misfits and other bands from the UK considered to be pop punk such as The Jam and the Buzzcocks. Then US band Bad Religion started off the style for modern pop punk in the 1970s. The reason it has the genre pop is due to the lyrics based on romance and teenage life, referring to the songs in the charts these days then with the punk it is the rock sound to it giving it an edgy feel to the music.

One of the pioneering bands of the pop punk genre is Greenday. In 1994 the signed to major label Reprise and released album Dookie, it sold over 15 million copies and started a serge for pop punks bands in america. The Offspring were the next band to release an album on then independent label Epitaph which has now become a major label in the industry for bands such as A Day To Remember and Parkway Drive. Epitaph gained much attention in the 90s offering lucrative deals to bands such as NOFX, Bad Religion and Rancid. Also on the scene in early-mid 90s were Ska Punk bands such as Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish.

In 1998 The Offspring released Americana featuring massive hits such as Pretty Fly (For a White Guy), Why Don't You Get a Job? and The Kids Are Alright. Eventually Blink 182 released Enema Of The State their first major album release and they are arguably the biggest pop punk band of all time. In 2001 Sum41 hit the scene with debut album All Killer, No Filler producing hits such as Fat Lip, In Too Deep and Motivation all anthems for pop punk genre, also generating brilliant music videos in the process which are still show 10 years later on all music channels. Also not forgetting one of the greats of pop punk New Found Glory who released hit album after hit album with brilliant videos to match the songs.

In the start to mid 2000s bands such as Good Charlotte released album Young and The Hopeless going triple platinum, featuring in teen movies such as American Pie and still playing massive gigs such as the Kerrang! tour and more recently V Festival in the UK. Also in 2002 the biggest pop punk tour of all time hit America with Blink 182, Greenday and Jimmy Eat World all performing, showing that pop punk had a real control in music in America.

In more recent times, pop punk is being controlled by bands such as Four Year Strong, Set Your Goals and Man Overboard, all still containing the basis of old school pop punk and producing videos just like blink 182 and new found glory did in the 90s. Blink 182 have made a return and the future of pop punk looks exciting with bands such as The Story So Far, The Wonder Years and With The Punches making brilliant videos and records.
